Coorg came into existence after the East India company took over in 1834. It is the Scotland of India with lush greenery, mountains, and fresh look over the land. This place is blessed by mother kaveri. The ancient name of Coorg was Kodagu and it was ruled by the Gangas of Talakad. Lately, Coorg was ruled by several dynasties like cholas, Chengavalas, Vijaynagaras etc. Then it came under the control of British who planted coffee plantation at this place.

·      Golden temple - Namdroling Monastery is the largest teaching centre of the school of Tibetan Buddhism known as Nyingmapa. This place holds some excellent examples of Tibetan architecture and artwork, as seen with the elaborately decorated temple tower and ornate outer walls, intricately adorned with beautiful murals.

·      Madikeri fort - A popular tourist attraction to witness the lives, rise and fall of several glorious rulers and dynasty. It is constructed in mud, then it  took shape in granite and has stood testimony to several incidents. It is a coming together of several religions and an amalgamation of different cultures and traditions.

·      Raja’s tomb – This tomb was built in the Indo-saracenic style and dates back to 1820. The cultural rich structure of Gaddige Raja’s tomb remains as the royal treasure piece.

·      Abby falls - This refreshing waterfall gushes and pounds on the rock with full force especially during the rains and the roars echoes in the valley. Abbey falls is a part of kaveri river in Karnataka that falls from 70 feet making.

·      Omkareshwara Temple - This 18th-century temple is an important religious pilgrimage site and amongst the most popular places to visit in Coorg. The legend goes that it was constructed by King Lingarajendra II to repent for his violent deeds and holds a Shivalingam from brought specially from Kashi.

·      Raja seat - The place has a history of having the king of Coorg to spend his time witnessing the scenic and panoramic vistas of the place. It is an ideally place to watch the majestic sunrise or hue struck sunset.  It is the best recreational spot.

·      Dubare Elephant camp  - This is a river camp which has trained Elephants and their mahout who bathe them and feed them. It is managed by the forest department and Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd. There are naturalists who elucidate the biology, ecology and the history of Elephants to the visitors and you can not only see them but even participate in the river bath and feeding.

·      Coffee plantation - Coorg is famous for huge acres of aromatic coffee plantations, some of them dating back to the 18th century. Coffee plantation trails top the chart of Coorg sightseeing places since some plantation owners opened up their estates for tourists.

Summer in Coorg is a great time to visit. While the rest of the plains are hot and uncomfortable, Coorg is cool and fresh, inviting people to relax and unwind in its pleasant climes. After winter, summer is the best climate to visit Coorg. The pleasant and cool summer time has a temperature between 20-40 degrees and advisable go during march to may.

 

Monsoon In Coorg:

Coorg has a tropical climate and experiences a robust monsoon. It starts with medium rainfall earlier in the season and the intensity increases as the calendar comes closer to mid-August and early September. It is colder during this season and heavy rainfall has been known to flood roads and cake them with mud, while also restricting outdoor activities. However, in no way should this stop you from visiting since the hill station is fresh and green, and its beauty is enhanced even further during this season where temperature is about 11-28 degrees.

Winter Season:

Coorg has a moderate climate, which makes every season a great season to visit. However, the best time to visit is from November to February if you wish to enjoy the outdoors and indulge in adventure activities and the temperature could be 29-28 degrees. Towards the end of March and in early April the land is bedecked in beautiful white flowers.

You can reach Coorg by bus, train, and flight.

·      By bus A bus is perhaps the most convenient and cheapest way to move about Coorg, especially if you are traveling long distances. You can choose between state-run government buses or book a seat in a private bus. The state-run buses have fixed routes and mainly operate between main towns or villages, while private buses can take you to literally any corner of Coorg.

·      By train Coorg does not have a railway station of its own. However, if you like train journeys and want to take your time getting to Coorg by train, there are a few options. You can take a train till the neighbouring cities of Mysore or Bangalore, both of which are well-connected to nearly all corners of India by train. Between the two, Mysore is closer at just 120 kms away from Coorg.

·      By flight - The closest international one is Mangalore International Airport, sitting at a distance of just 140 kms from Coorg city centre. For domestic flights, the nearest one is at Mysore, 120 kms from Coorg. The most well-connected airport near Coorg, however, is the Bangalore International Airport, albeit 286 kms away.
