Best time to visit:
Summer time:
The best time to visit Kodaikanal is during the most intense summer months, between April and June. This does not mean that Kodaikanal loses allure during the rest of the year. The contrast of the heat in the plains with the refreshing coolness of the mountains seems to provide more respite during summer.
While nearby towns reel under an average high temperature of 40 °C during the summer months, Kodaikanal stays cool at a pleasant 20 °C. For this very reason, summer happens to be the best time to visit Kodaikanal, with everyone keen on escaping the heat.
Monsoon In Kodaikanal:
July to September offers another fascinating time to be in this place. During these months, the influx of visitors drastically decreases, and one can experience the magnificence of solitude amidst the hills. The monsoons hit southern India during this time, resulting in the roads leading to Kodaikanal becoming comparatively less accessible.
Winter Season:
If you enjoy bracing cold weather, October to January is best time to visit Kodaikanal. There are some residual showers at this time, and though they only last for a short while, they can sometimes get quite intense. The average daytime temperatures are a pleasant 16 °C, with the night temperature often dropping to a decidedly chilly 8 °C. In December the temperature dips to its lowest, so it pays to be prepared with suitably warm clothes. These can also be purchased in the local market. Quite a few hotel rooms have fireplaces built in (especially in and around Vattakanal), and locals sell you ample firewood that can last for two to three days, for a hundred rupees.
Famous things to buy:
Kodaikanal is a small hill station in South India, which of course is not abundant with marketplaces or shops, but the few that are present are a real catch. Being a hill station, the place is rich in tree species like Eucalyptus hence it is famous for products of oils and balms that indeed smell good- including pain balms, medicinal oils, neem oils, etc. So, check out these places for shopping in Kodaikanal and shop your heart out!
The place has got many more interesting places to shop and make your bag full with its unique products.
Happening Time:
Timings: 9 AM to 6 PM.
As a hill station, the night falls pretty much earlier and people shut down their shops at 6 PM most probably. The rush, the activities gradually gets slows down by 5 PM and everyone gets back to home by 6 or 7 PM. So, if you want to enjoy, I could advise to visit all the place before 6 PM to avoid being left alone. Also, the temperature drops down not letting you enjoy the scenario. So, it is advisable to get back before 7AM.
How to reach:
You can reach Kodaikanal by bus, train, and flight.
· By bus – There are regular bus services to Kodaikanal from cities such as Chennai, Pondicherry, Coimbatore, Madurai, etc. In fact, this is the most preferred way to reach Kodaikanal because of the many options that are available. The Kodaikanal bus stand is centrally located and once you get down here, it’s easy to figure out where you need to go.
· By train – The rail route can be quite scenic so many people opt for travelling here by train. However, reaching the main town from here is not easy as only taxis are available. Taxi rates are not negotiable as there’s no other way to reach the town and taxi drivers often capitalize on that. The other railway station close by is Dindigul Railway Station. It can be a slightly circuitous route to reach Kodaikanal however as you will have to first take an auto to reach Dindigul Bus Stand and take a bus to Vathlagundu, and then a bus to Kodaikanal from there. There are direct buses from Dindigul to Kodaikanal too, but these are not very frequent. The distance from Dindigul to Vathlagundu is 30 minutes and from here to Kodaikanal, it’s 2 hours by bus.
· By flight – Kodaikanal doesn’t have an airport, so if you want to come here by air, then you will have to fly down to the nearest airport which is in Madurai, which is 120kms away, or Trichy which is 150kms away. Another airport that is often used to get to Kodaikanal is Coimbatore airport which is 175km away. Once you reach these airports, you can most likely take a taxi or a local TNSTC bus to reach Kodaikanal.
