Chronicles of Wayanad:

Being a part of God’s own country, Wayanad holds a glorified recognition and scenic beauty that never fails to make people admire. Earlier this place was ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe then came under the rule of Pazhassi Rajahs of the Kottayam royal dynasty where it rebounded after the abduction of Tipu who gave back the place to the former. Later during the British period, this territory was opened for the cultivation of tea and cash crops. Gradually, roads were laid across dangerous slopes which made the way much easier for trekkers, explorers and wanderers to jump into this location to unwind.

  • Pookkodu lake – This freshwater lake is situated in South India nestled among evergreen forests and multitudes of mountain slopes. This lake allocates space to Panamaram which is a small rivulet flowing into the Kabani River. It is a perennial freshwater lake protected by forested hills and it acts as a haven for freshwater fish and a lot of blue lotus flowers.  
  • Pazhazzi Raja Tomb and Museum – In memory of the great Pazhassai Raja, there is a tomb and museum in his remembrance. The tomb is surrounded by dense and beautifully cut tropics with small pathways and sitting areas accompanies by a calm and soothing tune of nature. It is a picnic spot and weekend getaway for many. You get to visit the nearby museum and can enjoy local dishes.  
  • Kuruvadwdeep – This place is in the middle of the Kabini river, the famous east-flowing river in Kerala. In this place, you get to see rich and rare species of flora and fauna. The place is best for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. 
  • Banasura Sagar Dam – This tourist place cages the most popular Karamanathodu tributary of the east-flowing river in Kerala which is the Kabini River. The dam is surrounded by scenic beauty where you can carry out adventures. 
  • Chembara peak – Chembara crest borders Nilgiri slopes and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. It is the perfect place for trekking exercises. It is the tallest peak in Wayanad. This place also engulfs heart moulded lake which is the pinnacle of this spot. 
  • Soochipara falls – It is a three-layered waterfall at Vellarimala in Wayanad. It is also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfall which is a 20-minute drive from Meppadi. It’s a perfect place for trekking and rock climbing.
  • Muthanga Wildlife sanctuary – It is a heaven for large and wild animals such as Indian Bison, elephants, tiger, deer etc. along with some distinctive birds. The sanctuary ranges are called Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat, and Tholpetty. You will find some endangered species of flora and fauna and there inside the sanctuary. 
  • The neolithic cave site of Edakkal – It is a pictorial depiction cave from 6000 BC. To reach this place, you need to trek through the Ambukutty Mala. It had two chambers. The walls of this cave have objects used by humans and animal figures dating back to the neolithic age. This depicture provides incredible confirmation for a very enlightened society who lived in the pre-noteworthy age.  
  • Ambukuthi hill – It is a beautiful mountain located in the Wayanad district of Kerala. This place is ideal for sunset views and situated nearly 1000 meters above sea level, travellers need to walk almost 1 kilometre from Edukkal cave to this place.

Best time to visit:

Summer time:

Summer is a shoulder season to visit this place. It will be extremely hot which extends from March to May. Though this place is not advisable to visit at this season. This period could be hot and humid where the temperature could be 25 to 35 degrees. 

 

Monsoon season:

 This is the ideal period I could say. This season has heavy rainfall about which you must be very much cautious. The monsoon low season starts from June to September when the temperature runs 24-31 degrees. This place this season is a great unwind for nature enthusiasts, and trekkers. Wayanad with a bunch of friends during this season will be totally fun. 

 

Winter highs:

The chilly winter season is the peak season for visitors. This season prevails from October to February when the temperature falls from 20-30 degrees. The apt time fit for a quick escape break with friends and families.

Every place has its identical and significant things. Wayanad is well known for its tea, honey, spices, handicrafts, and much more. Apart from attracting scenic beauty, this place stands high on product quality. The best shopping places are

? Santhi Pappadam – It is a stationery shop near the market road. 

? Trident Arcade – This is near Sulthan bathery where you can shop for gifts, crockeries, and bags.

? Easwaran Nanmboodri – This place is good for stationery and books. 

 

Happening Time: 

Since Wayanad is a hill station and surrounded by forest, the temperature decreases by evening and by night it could be extremely cold which makes it difficult to carry nightlife there. You get to see the most happening from 7 AM to 9 PM. Hotels, shops, cafes, and every other place will be shut by 8 PM, so it is better to check out places before the specified time. This is the best time to watch the Wayanad people's life, visit places and experience stuff.  

In Wayanad, you get to taste authentic Keralite cuisine. The best food at Wayanad is Puttu and Beef Fry: Hot “Puttu” served with spicy beef fry is a delightful treat for nonvegetarians at this destination. 

 

How to reach:

You can reach Wayanad by bus, train, and flight from Mysore or Bangalore.

· By bus – Through KSRTC buses, you can reach Wayanad from Bangalore which covers 289 Km, and from Mysore which covers 130 Km. Buses and private cabs are also available.  

· By train – The nearest railway station to Wayanad is Kozhikode which is also known as the Calicut Railway Station and is 62km away from the destination. Rajdhani and Poona express usually reach Kozhikode. 

· By flight – Calicut International Airport in Karipur is situated 65km away from Wayanad. It connects Bangalore, Delhi and every major place.
